Spondylolisthesis

What is spondylolisthesis?

Spondylolisthesis means one vertebra has shifted forward relative to the one below it. Many people remain active without symptoms, while others experience back pain, stiffness or pain travelling into the legs.

What causes spondylolisthesis?

Age-related changes can lead to degenerative spondylolisthesis. In younger athletes, a stress injury in part of the vertebra can contribute to isthmic spondylolisthesis. Congenital differences or trauma are less common causes.

How is spondylolisthesis treated?

At Alliance Wellness Clinic in Vancouver, treatment is based on your assessment, symptoms and goals. Options include:

Chiropractic Care: Carefully selected mobilization, soft tissue therapy and rehabilitation. Flexion-distraction is considered only where appropriate; high-velocity manipulation directly over an unstable segment is avoided.

Physiotherapy: Core, hip and gluteal strengthening, movement retraining and progressive rehabilitation.

Osteopathic Manual Therapy: Gentle hands-on techniques focused on surrounding mobility and muscle tension.

Registered Massage Therapy: Hands-on treatment to address associated muscle tension and discomfort.

Acupuncture: Supports pain management and associated muscular symptoms.

Class 4 Laser Therapy: An optional adjunct for associated musculoskeletal pain; it does not reposition the vertebra.

When should you seek treatment?

Book an assessment for recurring back pain, pain with standing or sport, or radiating symptoms. Seek prompt care for worsening weakness and emergency care for bladder or bowel changes or groin numbness.

Feel better. Together.
